Telescopic Baby is a new record label, publishing and production company specialising in “old school” artist development. The seven Telescopic Baby artists, together with company founder Ken Rose and manager Christian Ulf-Hansen have established a music business co-operative whose goals are to grow and sustain a prosperous business without sacrificing artistic integrity.

In the summer of ‘10 the last thing on Rose’s mind was to start a record company. As a songwriter Rose has been signed to EMI, Famous Music/Sony ATV, Warner Chappell and has produced records internationally for many other record labels. After returning from a year long tour playing guitar with Marianne Faithfull Ken set up shop at London’s Livingston Studios, where he still does most of his work.

Rose was giving a lecture at a music college on the state of the music business and the realities of being an artist in the current climate. During Q and A he was asked what his perfect label would look like and, after a 15 minute public brainstorm, he had laid the groundwork for Telescopic Baby. Rose listed 25-30 acts that he liked and narrowed it down to seven. Two months after the lecture he found a patron and signed his “seven babies”.

The genres of music represented by Telescopic Baby are varied but the common denominator is solid song-writing. Rose says,“without a good song you are paddling a broken boat before you hit the ocean. Great songs performed and recorded with honesty, inspired creativity and personality are the cornerstones needed to reach a core fan base. At that point there is a lot of hard work and luck involved.” Telescopic Baby artists are encouraged to experiment and discover themselves so that the end result of their creative journey is true to their character. So far the majority of every artist has recorded their material live, vocals included, as Rose believes in capturing moments and building on the magic that occurs when things happen naturally and intuitively. Telescopic Baby believes that you can have fun and still sell music!

Telescopic Baby is more than music. It is people with varied backgrounds bonded by likeminded goals and creative vision.

Telescopic Baby’s seven artists, Mark Morgan, Alan McKim, Kate Daisy Grant, Emison Wonder, Andrew Parry, Alexia Chellun and Lora Kirk, and Rose’s Below-Fi project have already attracted attention in a short period of time. Alan McKim was awarded the 2011 SAMA for best acoustic alternative act, and opened the 2011 Music Week in Tallinn with rave reviews, including making a fan of Estonian President Toomas Hendrik who praised Alan’s work in the international media. Kate Daisy Grant, Lora Kirk, and Below-Fi have cuts on the new Under The Covers project in America celebrating Roy Orbison’s 75th anniversary with front page iTunes coverage in fall 2011 and a possible international Sony release. Kate has also been invited for a 3 week residency at Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival from 6-27 August. During October, Mark Morgan and Lora Kirk will be promoting their new records in America playing shows with successful mid-westerners Hero Jr. Mark’s new record, Muddy Road Season is an impressive debut for an artist in his early 20s. Alexia Chellun, who equally divides her time as a singer-songwriter and yoga instructor has released records in both genres and has been touring around Europe performing her music and conducting seminars in English, Spanish, French and Creole. She is developing a lifestyle television show and is realising her dream of combining her artistry and spiritual practice. Liverpudlian Andrew Parry is on the way into the studio to record his debut with his band in July and Rose is sure he will “inspire listeners to rediscover the joys of listening to inspired music.” Rapper/Storyteller Emison Wonder, who also records totally live, will be recording his debut record in September in Ireland.

Rose is satisfied with the babies’ progress to date and stands by his development methods. Inspired by Ahmet Ehrtigun, Jac Holzman and Berry Gordy, Rose believes that creative interaction between artists and management is the only way to work and that freedom of expression is a commercial tool that got lost with the technical revolution in the 80s. “Pre-80s was ALL about the music and artists and labels defined themselves together. A label had a reputation based on the artists and people would blindly buy records from labels based on trust, knowing what they bought would be quality artistry. I think that is amazing and hope that, regardless of taste, people will me moved by our artists, both as performers and as humans.”

In September Telescopic Baby will be on the map with eight releases, their artists performing world wide.
